Pakistani students looking for an international degree without travelling too far often find Malaysia to be the perfect fit. The country offers affordable education, a welcoming environment, and qualifications that employers respect worldwide.

AAA Educators has put together this straightforward guide to help you understand everything from university choices and expenses to visa steps and part-time work rules.

Why Malaysia Keeps Gaining Popularity Among Pakistani Students

Every year, more students from Pakistan choose Malaysia over other destinations. Here is what draws them in.

The cost of tuition is significantly lower than in Western countries. Yet the quality of education remains high, and degrees are recognised globally.

English is the main language used in classrooms, so students do not face a language barrier.

The food, customs, and way of life feel familiar to someone coming from Pakistan. This makes settling in much easier.

Malaysia sits right in the middle of Asia, making it a great base for travel during semester breaks.

On top of all this, many Malaysian universities have partnerships with institutions in the United Kingdom and Australia. Some even offer joint degrees, giving students international credentials without leaving the region.

International University Branch Campuses Located in Malaysia

Several well-known universities from around the world have set up branch campuses in Malaysia. Studying at these campuses means earning a degree from a top university at a fraction of the normal cost.

From Australia:

  • Monash University
  • University of Wollongong
  • Swinburne University of Technology

From the United Kingdom:

  • University of Southampton
  • University of Nottingham
  • University of Reading
  • Heriot-Watt University

From Ireland:

All of these institutions rank among the best globally. Their Malaysian campuses follow the same curriculum and standards as their main campuses.

Fields of Study That Attract Pakistani Students Most

Based on what Pakistani students typically apply for, these subject areas are the most popular.

  • Business administration and management
  • Computer science and information technology
  • Engineering in its various forms
  • Medicine and related health sciences
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Creative arts, design, and media

Monthly Living Costs: A Realistic Student Budget

Here is what students typically spend each month in Malaysia.

Rent or hostel fees
RM 300 to RM 1,200 (PKR 18,000 to 72,000)

Food and groceries
RM 300 to RM 800 (PKR 18,000 to 48,000)

Entertainment and personal care
RM 200 to RM 500 (PKR 12,000 to 30,000)

Other expenses to plan for:

  • Visa processing charges
  • Required medical check-up
  • Mandatory health insurance
  • Plane tickets to and from Malaysia

Documents Needed for the Malaysian Student Pass

To study in Malaysia, you must obtain a Student Pass. Below are the documents you will need to provide.

  • Official admission letter from your Malaysian university
  • Passport that remains valid for at least 12 to 18 months
  • Properly filled IMM.14 visa application forms
  • Recent passport-sized colour photographs
  • Personal bond form completed and stamped by your university
  • Proof of valid medical insurance
  • Police clearance certificate (required for some nationalities)
  • Your academic transcripts and certificates

A note for Pakistani applicants: Students from Pakistan may go through additional background checks. Your university will handle the Visa Approval Letter (VAL) application through EMGS once you have received your offer letter.

The Application Process from Start to Finish

First, secure your admission. Get an unconditional offer letter from a Malaysian institution that EMGS recognises.

Second, let your university handle the VAL application. Your university submits your documents to EMGS and Malaysian Immigration. If approved, you receive a Visa Approval Letter.

Third, check if you need a Single-Entry Visa. Depending on your passport, you may need to visit the Malaysian embassy for a Single-Entry Visa before you travel.

Fourth, arrive in Malaysia and submit your passport. Once you land, your university will collect passports and send them to the State Immigration Office. They will attach the Student Pass sticker to your passport.

Fifth, collect your Student Pass and iKad. After processing, you will receive your passport back with the Student Pass. EMGS will also issue an iKad, which is your official student identification card.

How long it lasts and how to renew:

  • The Student Pass is valid for one year at a time
  • Renew annually through your university
  • Each renewal costs RM 60

Working While Studying: Rules for Pakistani Students

Part-time work is allowed in Malaysia, but the rules are strict.

Maximum hours per week: 20 hours

When you are allowed to work:

  • During semester breaks
  • On public holidays
  • During university holidays that last more than seven days

When you are not allowed to work:

  • During teaching weeks
  • During examination periods

How to get permission:

  • Apply through your university’s international student office
  • Your university will forward the request to Immigration Malaysia

Typical approval requirements:

  • A valid Student Pass
  • Good class attendance records
  • Satisfactory academic performance
  • A confirmed job offer in an approved industry

Jobs you can do: Restaurants, petrol stations, mini-marts, hotels

Jobs you cannot do: Cashier, musician, massage therapist, factory worker, or any role deemed unsafe

These rules are designed to protect students from exploitation and to keep academics as your top priority.
